AESO Warns Electric Vehicles Will Increase Electricity Demand in Alberta

Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO)

The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) has projected a major rise in electric vehicle (EV) adoption across the province over the next two decades. As more Albertans switch from gas-powered vehicles to battery-electric models, the AESO expects a sharp increase in electricity demand — one that could reshape how the province manages power generation and distribution.

Projected Growth in Electric Vehicles Across Alberta

According to AESO’s 2021 Long-Term Outlook, Alberta could see between 200,000 and two million electric vehicles on the road by 2041. Even the conservative scenario would represent a significant shift in how energy is consumed and supplied across the province.

Currently, Alberta has more than 3,500 registered electric vehicles — up nearly tenfold since 2017. While that number is small compared to the province’s 3.6 million total registered vehicles, the growth trajectory is clear. With federal regulations requiring all new car sales to be zero-emission by 2035, the high-end AESO projection now seems much closer to reality.

Can Alberta’s Power Grid Handle the Demand?

One of AESO’s biggest concerns is peak demand. If hundreds of thousands of drivers plug in their EVs at the same time — typically in the early evening — the load on the grid could surge. AESO estimates that simultaneous charging could create as much as 3,900 megawatts of new demand, equivalent to powering two cities the size of Calgary. Even at the low end of their projections, the added demand could reach 400 megawatts.

Despite these numbers, AESO’s report suggests that Alberta’s overall electricity consumption will only grow by about half a percent per year over the next two decades. That is one of the slowest growth rates on record, meaning that with smart infrastructure planning and the ongoing addition of renewables, the province should be able to meet new EV-related demand without major strain.

Renewable Energy and Smarter Charging Solutions

Calgary homeowners can play a key role in managing this new energy demand. Many modern EV chargers can be programmed to draw power only during off-peak hours or when renewable generation is highest. For example, EV owners with solar panels can synchronize charging with daylight production, reducing stress on the grid while maximizing the use of clean energy.

Smart charging systems and home energy management tools are also improving rapidly. These technologies allow homeowners to monitor, schedule, and optimize EV charging for both cost savings and grid efficiency. Over time, this intelligent approach to charging will help flatten demand peaks and support Alberta’s transition toward a cleaner, more balanced power system.

Preparing Your Home for the Future of Energy

With electric vehicles becoming the standard, ensuring your home’s electrical system is ready for the future is essential. Many older homes may require electrical service upgrades to handle the added load of a Level 2 EV charger or other modern systems. A certified electrician can assess your existing panel, upgrade capacity where needed, and install a code-compliant EV charger for reliable, safe charging at home.

Looking Ahead: Alberta’s Energy Transition

Alberta has long been known for its oil and gas production, but the province is rapidly diversifying its energy landscape. As solar farms, wind projects, and cleaner gas generation continue to grow, EV ownership will only accelerate that momentum. The transition to electric vehicles is not just about convenience or savings; it represents a broader shift toward a sustainable, future-ready energy economy.
