Project Overview
This project in Varsity Estates, Calgary, combined multiple luxury upgrades into one electrical installation: a new sauna, hot tub, and cold plunge. The home was on a 100 amp service, so instead of upgrading to 200 amps, the homeowner chose to install two DCC-12 energy management systems to safely handle the additional load. Over several days, our team completed underground wiring, energy management installation, and the full electrical build-out for the sauna and spa equipment.
Installation Details
- Panel: 100 amp existing panel with energy management installed
- Energy Management: 2 × DCC-12 units (by Thermolec), controlling the hot tub and existing air conditioning
- Hot Tub: 50 amp dedicated circuit, connected via spa panel
- Sauna: 50 amp dedicated circuit, with full electrical build of controls and terminations
- Extras: GFCI outlet for cold plunge, exterior lighting on photocell
Site Conditions and Challenges
The homeowner handled the backyard trenching with their landscaper, while our electricians managed the underground wiring. The crawl space inside the home provided limited access, and rain on the final day made conditions more difficult. Wiring the sauna itself was the most challenging part, requiring detailed control wiring and careful terminations, but persistence paid off, and the final result exceeded the homeowner’s expectations.Electrical Work Completed
Our team installed underground TECK cable at a depth of two feet to supply the new equipment. Circuits were run for the hot tub, sauna, and cold plunge directly from the main panel. Two DCC-12 energy management systems were installed in the basement near the panel to balance demand between the new spa loads and the existing air conditioning system. A spa panel was added at the rear of the sauna for hot tub protection, and all bonding, GFCI, and code requirements were met. The project passed inspection with no deficiencies.Customer Experience
