Can Your Calgary Home Support an EV Charger?

Installing the charger is usually straightforward. Determining whether your electrical service can safely support it is the important part.

We review your service size, panel capacity, existing electrical loads, planned charger amperage and the route to the garage before recommending a solution.

Depending on the home, the right option may be:

• Installing the charger on the existing service
• Reducing the charging rate to match the available capacity
• Adding an energy-management system
• Upgrading the panel or electrical service
• Moving or extending the service closer to a detached garage

We do not automatically recommend a 200A upgrade. The goal is to provide the charging speed you need without adding unnecessary work or cost.

How We Plan an EV Charger Installation

Every EV charger installation starts with the electrical service, not the charger. We assess the home’s available capacity, the charging speed required, and the installation route before recommending the most practical solution.

We review the service size, main breaker, existing electrical loads and available panel capacity. This determines whether the charger can be installed directly or whether load management or a service upgrade should be considered.

The largest charger is not always the best choice. We size the circuit around the vehicle’s maximum charging rate, daily driving requirements and the capacity available at the home. A properly sized 32A or 40A charger may provide all the overnight charging required without unnecessary electrical upgrades.

Many Calgary homes with 100A services can support an EV charger using an approved energy-management system. The system temporarily reduces or pauses charging when the home approaches its electrical limit. Where load management is not practical, we can complete the panel or service upgrade in-house.

Installation cost is strongly affected by the distance and route between the electrical panel and the charger. We assess finished basements, attached and detached garages, exterior routes, trenching requirements and the best charger location before preparing the estimate.

Why Consider Our EV Charger Installation Service

This Calgary homeowner wanted faster overnight EV charging, but the existing 100A electrical service did not have enough spare capacity to support the charger at full output without additional controls. The existing electrical panel also needed replacement.

We replaced the old panel with a new 100A electrical panel, installed a Tesla Wall Connector configured for 40A charging on a 50A circuit, and added an approved energy-management system.

The energy-management system monitors the home’s electrical demand and temporarily reduces or pauses EV charging when the service approaches its allowable limit. This allowed the homeowner to keep the existing 100A service while gaining reliable overnight charging and a modern replacement panel.

The installation included:

  • Existing 100A panel replacement
  • Electrical load and service-capacity review
  • Tesla Wall Connector installation
  • 50A dedicated EV charging circuit
  • Energy-management equipment
  • Electrical permit and inspection
  • Clean installation in the finished garage

Replacing a 100A panel does not increase the home’s service capacity. In this project, the new panel improved the electrical equipment while load management allowed the EV charger to operate safely without a 200A service upgrade.

Often, yes. We first review the home’s existing electrical loads and available service capacity. Depending on the results, the charger may be installed directly, configured at a lower charging rate, connected through an approved energy-management system, or combined with a service upgrade. A 200A upgrade is not automatically required.

No. A Tesla Wall Connector can be configured for different circuit sizes and charging outputs. Tesla supports installations ranging from 12A charging on a 15A breaker up to 48A charging on a 60A breaker. We recommend the charging rate that fits the vehicle, daily driving and available electrical capacity.

The fastest possible charger is not always necessary. Common residential options include 32A charging on a 40A circuit, 40A charging on a 50A circuit and 48A charging on a 60A circuit. The correct size depends on the vehicle’s onboard charger, overnight charging needs and the home’s available capacity.

An energy-management system monitors the home’s electrical demand. If the service approaches its allowable limit, the system temporarily reduces or pauses EV charging. This can allow some homes to add a charger without completing an immediate 200A service upgrade.

A hardwired charger is generally our preferred option for a permanent home installation. It can support higher charging outputs, has fewer connection points and keeps the installation clean. A NEMA 14-50 outlet may still make sense when portability is important or the vehicle uses a mobile charging cable. Tesla’s Mobile Connector is limited to 32A when used with a NEMA 14-50 adapter.

Yes. The City of Calgary requires an electrical permit for EV charging installations. The permit must be obtained by a qualified electrical contractor, and the completed installation is inspected. Panel Upgrade Experts handles the permit and inspection process.

Yes. We assess the distance from the electrical panel, available capacity, cable route, trenching requirements and whether it makes more sense to feed the garage from the house or relocate and upgrade the electrical service closer to the garage.
