The cost of upgrading an electrical panel can vary due to multiple factors. One of the main factors that determine the cost to upgrade an electrical panel is the age of the home and the condition of the electric system.

Some older homes where ungrounded wires are present need additional protection in the form of ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) Breakers. GFCI Breakers are quite expensive compared to standard circuit breakers, costing around $100 per circuit breaker. Newer homes can have many more circuits than older homes, as wiring codes change over time. So the number of circuits in the panel can also be a factor in the cost of an electrical panel upgrade.

Another large factor in the cost to replace an electrical panel is the power coming into the house referred to as the electrical service. If the property has a 100 amp panel and 100 amp service most of the time we can replace the 100 amp panel without needing to increase the power. If the property has only 60 or 70 amp service, then we would need to upgrade the power coming in at the same time we upgrade the electrical panel referred to as a panel and service upgrade.

Another consideration to upgrading to a higher power would depend on the future use of the property. Upgrades to 200 amps are common for jobs where we are installing electric car chargers and hot tubs.

Our most common electrical panel upgrades are in single-family homes built in the 1960 and 1970s with a 100 amp panel and service.  The average cost of replacing an electrical panel in these homes is typical $2000 to $2500.

If we are upgrading the panel with a service of less than 100 amps, we would need to increase both the service and panel to 100 amp or more, the cost of the electrical panel upgrade with a service upgrade would range between $3000 and $4000 for the average home. The cost of upgrading an electrical panel to 200 amps would be the higher end of that range.
