The honest answer is four to eight weeks in most cases, and the majority of that time is not installation, it is permits and ENMAX preparation. Here is the full timeline broken down.
Stage 1: Site Assessment and System Design (1 to 2 Weeks)
Once you book an assessment, we visit the site to evaluate roof condition, orientation, shading, panel capacity, and consumption data. System design follows, covering panel layout, inverter selection, racking configuration, and the single line diagram required for the permit application.
If a panel upgrade is required before solar can be installed, that scope is identified here and included in the project plan. See our post on electrical panel upgrades for solar for detail on when that is needed.
Stage 2: City of Calgary Permit Application (2 to 4 Weeks)
A solar installation in Calgary requires an electrical permit from the City of Calgary. The permit application includes the system design documentation, single line diagram, and equipment specifications. City of Calgary permit processing currently runs two to four weeks depending on workload at the time of submission.
We submit the permit application and manage all correspondence with the City. You do not need to be involved in this stage.
Stage 3: ENMAX Interconnection Application and Meter Swap (4 to 8 Weeks)
This is the stage that accounts for most of the total project timeline. ENMAX must review and approve the interconnection application and replace your existing meter with a bi-directional unit before installation can proceed. The meter swap happens before installation day, not after, which means your system is ready to go live the same day it is installed and inspected.
ENMAX interconnection processing currently takes four to eight weeks from submission. During peak periods, particularly spring and early summer, timelines can stretch toward the longer end of that range. We submit the interconnection application as early in the process as possible so the meter swap is complete and waiting before your installation date is confirmed.
Stage 4: Panel Upgrade (If Required) – 1 Day
If a panel upgrade is part of the scope, it is completed before the solar installation begins. Most panel upgrades in Calgary are completed in a single day. The ENMAX service disconnect and reconnect required for the panel upgrade is coordinated separately from the solar interconnection application.
Stage 5: Installation Day (1 to 2 Days)
The physical installation of a residential solar system in Calgary typically takes one day for a standard rooftop system. Larger systems or those with more complex roof layouts may run into a second day. The installation covers:
- Racking and panel mounting
- DC wiring from panels to inverter
- Inverter installation and AC connection to the panel
- Monitoring system setup
- Labelling and documentation required for inspection
Weather is a factor. We do not install in rain or when roofs are icy. Calgary installation scheduling accounts for this, particularly in shoulder seasons.
Stage 6: City of Calgary Electrical Inspection and System Live (Installation Day)
The City of Calgary electrical inspector attends on the same day as the installation. Once the inspector signs off, your system is live immediately. Because ENMAX has already swapped the meter before installation day, there is no waiting around after inspection for a commissioning visit. Your system starts generating and exporting from the moment it passes inspection.
Our installations pass City of Calgary inspection first time on every job.

When Is the Best Time to Start the Process in Calgary?
The best time to start is before you need it. If you want your system generating by summer, beginning the process in February or March gives you comfortable lead time to clear permits and ENMAX interconnection before the high production months. Installers and permit offices both see increased volume from March onward, which can extend timelines at the busier end of the season.
That said, solar systems installed in fall or winter still generate and still earn micro-generation credits. There is no bad time to install, earlier in the process timeline just means less waiting.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does solar installation take in Calgary?
From signed contract to a live system, most Calgary residential solar installations take four to eight weeks. The physical installation and inspection happen on the same day. The majority of the timeline is City of Calgary permit processing and ENMAX meter swap.
How long does ENMAX interconnection take?
Currently four to eight weeks from submission. ENMAX replaces your meter before installation day, so there is no waiting around after inspection for the system to go live.
Can I use my solar system before the ENMAX meter swap?
No. The system cannot be energised until ENMAX has installed the bi-directional meter. That is why we submit the interconnection application as early as possible so the meter is ready before your installation date is confirmed.
What happens if my roof is not ready for installation day?
We assess roof condition during the site visit. If your roof needs replacing before solar can be installed, that is identified at the quote stage. See our post on whether to replace your roof before going solar.
Does winter weather affect the installation timeline?
It can affect scheduling of the installation day itself if conditions are unsafe for roof work. It does not affect permit processing or ENMAX interconnection timelines, which run year round.
Do you serve areas outside Calgary?
Yes. We serve Cochrane, Okotoks, and Chestermere in addition to Calgary.
