Acreage properties in Alberta are some of the best candidates for solar in the province. Higher electricity consumption, more usable roof and ground space, and Fortis Alberta territory rates that make the financial case compelling. Here is what acreage owners need to know before getting a quote.
Why Acreages Are Well Suited for Solar
Most acreage properties in Alberta run significantly higher electricity consumption than urban homes. Well pumps, outbuildings, shop lighting, heated garages, and agricultural loads all add up. A property consuming 15,000 to 25,000 kWh per year has a much stronger financial case for solar than a Calgary home consuming 7,200 kWh, simply because there is more bill to offset.
Acreage roofs are also typically larger, less shaded, and oriented without the constraints of neighbouring structures that affect urban installations. Ground mount systems are a practical option where roof space is limited or the roof orientation is not ideal. The combination of high consumption, available space, and strong Alberta sun hours makes acreage solar one of the most financially sound applications of the technology.
Fortis Alberta vs ENMAX: What Acreage Owners Need to Know
Most acreage properties outside Calgary city limits are served by Fortis Alberta rather than ENMAX. The interconnection process and micro-generation framework operate under the same Alberta Micro-Generation Regulation for both utilities, but the application process, forms, and timelines are specific to each utility.
Key differences worth knowing:
- Fortis Alberta serves rural Rocky View County, Foothills County, and most acreage properties in the communities surrounding Calgary
- The micro-generation application is submitted to Fortis Alberta rather than ENMAX
- Fortis Alberta’s interconnection review timelines may differ from ENMAX,confirm current timelines at the time of your project
- Both utilities follow Alberta’s micro-generation rules for export credits, so the financial mechanics are the same regardless of which utility serves your property
We have completed solar installations in both ENMAX and Fortis Alberta territory, including properties in Rocky View County and Foothills County. We handle the utility interconnection application for both.
Rooftop vs Ground Mount Solar for Acreages
Both options work well on acreage properties and the right choice depends on your specific situation.
Rooftop Installation
If your acreage home or shop has a suitable south or west facing roof with minimal shading and adequate structural condition, rooftop is typically the more cost-effective option. The racking uses existing structure and no additional land area is required. Most acreage homes and shops have more than enough roof space for a system sized to their consumption.
Ground Mount Installation
Ground mounts are worth considering when the roof is not suitable due to orientation, shading, age, or structural concerns. A ground mount system can be positioned and angled optimally for Calgary’s latitude regardless of the building’s orientation. Ground mounts also make maintenance and snow clearing easier. The additional cost is in the racking foundation work, but on an acreage property the space is rarely a constraint.
Some acreage owners install a ground mount to complement an existing rooftop system when they want to increase capacity beyond what the roof can accommodate. We assess both options during every site visit and recommend the configuration that gives you the best return on the investment.

System Sizing for Acreages
System sizing for an acreage property follows the same principle as any residential installation, we size to your actual consumption rather than a round number. The difference is that acreage consumption is typically higher and more variable, so twelve months of utility bills gives a more accurate picture than a single recent bill.
A typical acreage property in Rocky View or Foothills County consuming 18,000 to 20,000 kWh per year would be looking at a system in the 15kW to 20kW range to achieve meaningful offset. At those system sizes the financial case is strong, payback periods are competitive, and the CEIP on-bill financing option through your utility makes the upfront cost manageable.
Larger systems on acreages may also warrant a three phase inverter assessment if the property has three phase service to a shop or agricultural building. We cover this during the site assessment.
Panel Capacity on Acreage Properties
Acreage properties with shops, outbuildings, or agricultural loads often have 200 amp or larger service already in place. Where the existing panel has sufficient capacity and busbar headroom under CEC Rule 64-112, no panel upgrade is required. Where a larger system pushes beyond the load side calculation limit, a line side connection or panel upgrade resolves it.
We cover the busbar calculation in detail in our post on electrical panel upgrades for solar. The same principles apply to acreage properties, with the added consideration that shop sub-panels may offer an alternative interconnection point for larger systems.
What Does Acreage Solar Cost in Alberta?
A fully installed residential solar system runs $10,000 to $25,000 depending on system size and complexity. Acreage installations at the larger end of the sizing range or with ground mount components will sit toward the upper end of that range. Ground mount foundations add cost depending on soil conditions and post depth requirements in Alberta’s frost zone.
Financing through the CEIP programme is available for Fortis Alberta customers as well as ENMAX customers. We are CEIP registered and manage the application process for both utilities.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install solar on an acreage in Alberta?
Yes. Acreage properties are well suited for solar given higher consumption, more available space, and strong Alberta sun hours. We install throughout Rocky View County, Foothills County, and surrounding communities.
Does Fortis Alberta allow solar micro-generation?
Yes. Fortis Alberta operates under the same Alberta Micro-Generation Regulation as ENMAX. Export credits offset your Fortis Alberta bill the same way ENMAX credits work for urban customers.
Is a ground mount system better than rooftop for an acreage?
It depends on your roof condition, orientation, and available land. Ground mounts offer more flexibility on positioning and angle but cost more due to foundation work. We assess both options during the site visit and recommend the better fit for your property.
What size solar system does an acreage need?
It depends on your consumption. Acreage properties typically consume significantly more than urban homes. We size every system to twelve months of actual utility bills rather than a round number estimate.
Is CEIP financing available for Fortis Alberta customers?
Yes. The CEIP on-bill financing programme is available to both ENMAX and Fortis Alberta residential customers. We are CEIP registered and handle the application for both utilities.
Do you install solar on acreages with shops or agricultural buildings?
Yes. We assess all structures on the property during the site visit and can design systems that serve multiple buildings where the electrical configuration supports it.
