Cost to Install an EV Charger at Home in Alberta | Panel Upgrade Experts

Level 2 EV charger installed in a Calgary home garage

If you are buying an EV or already have one, installing a Level 2 charger at home is the practical next step. Here is what it actually costs in Alberta and what drives the price up or down.

Level 1 vs Level 2 vs Level 3: Which One Are You Installing?

Level 1 is the standard 120 volt cord that comes with your vehicle. It works but adds roughly 8 to 12 kilometres of range per hour. For most drivers that means plugging in every night and still not keeping up with daily use. No installation cost, but not a real solution for most households.

Level 2 runs on 240 volts, the same as your dryer or electric range. It adds 30 to 50 kilometres of range per hour and fully charges most EVs overnight. This is what the vast majority of Alberta homeowners install and what this post covers.

Level 3 (DC fast charging) is a commercial technology. Installation runs $50,000 or more and requires a three phase power supply that residential properties in Calgary do not have. It is not a residential option.

What Does a Level 2 EV Charger Installation Cost in Alberta?

For most Calgary homes, a Level 2 EV charger installation runs $900 to $1,800 all in. That includes the charger unit, labour, permit, and City of Calgary inspection. Here is what drives the price within that range:

Does Your Electrical Panel Need Upgrading First?

A Level 2 charger requires a dedicated 240 volt circuit, typically 40 to 50 amps. If your panel is full or your home is still on 100 amp service, an electrical panel upgrade is required before the charger can be installed. A 200 amp upgrade in Calgary runs $4,000 to $6,000 for overhead service and $7,000 to $10,000 for underground. If you are already planning a panel upgrade, adding an EV charger circuit at the same time keeps costs down.

Tesla Wall Connector vs Other Level 2 Chargers

The Tesla Wall Connector is a Level 2 charger. Installation cost is the same as any other Level 2 unit. The connector itself runs $500 to $700. Non-Tesla EVs can use any standard Level 2 charger with a J1772 connector, which covers every major brand on the market. If you drive a Tesla and are also considering other vehicles in future, a universal charger with a Tesla adapter is worth considering.

Combining an EV Charger with Solar

If you have or are planning a solar panel system, your EV charger can run largely on solar-generated electricity during the day. Under Alberta’s micro-generation rules, solar credits offset your ENMAX bill including the power you use to charge overnight. The two systems work well together and are worth planning at the same time if both are on your radar.

Permits and Inspections in Calgary

EV charger installation in Calgary requires an electrical permit and a City of Calgary inspection. Any licensed electrician should be pulling this permit as a matter of course. If a contractor quotes you without mentioning a permit, that is a red flag. Unpermitted electrical work creates liability when you sell and can affect your home insurance.

We handle the permit and City of Calgary inspection on every EV charger installation we complete.
